October 2004 Archives

Easily the best costume I saw on Friday, haha... Pedro offers you his protection.

Honorable Mention: Little Aragorn

Nutjobs at work, er... "Flying Elvi"

I'm the floating head dressed in red.

So yeah. My team decided it would be cool to be "The Solar System" and I drew Mars-- so Marvin Martian was my answer to that assignment. Nevermind that Marvin is like a fraction of my height... Of course as I was putting on that black face paint all I could think was 'Well they won't be looking for.... NOT me...."

Friday night was the Lord of the Rings symphony downtown-- it ruled. It bugged me that I couldn't hear the soprano soloist half the time (sing into the mic, lady!) but otherwise it was a blast-- kinda like the abridged version of the trilogy.

I hit Tony Romas one last time Saturday so Dan could get endless slab, while I indulged in a brownie skillet (since I knew I'd be starting a diet Monday, hah).

Later had some Korean and watched the Boogady movies and laughed at Bobo--

I think he tied for 1st place-- you can't beat the Hosehead costume

So there you have it. Another Halloween come and gone, with snow now on the ground and the Holiday Season soon to be in full swing.

Ok, so I photoshopped Shakespeare's head off... I just thought it looked cooler that way with the skull sitting next to him, hehe.

Of course no one can resist a cute little puppy. Look how tiny this dog is!

As I mentioned the other day, a couple of pics from the Red Butte Garden "Garden After Dark" or whatever it was called. It was more family-oriented than anything, nothing terribly scary though the spiders were kinda cool-- if only they'd be animated. As such, oportunities for pics were fleeting and even then it was night-time and shots don't turn out so great with a snapshot camera like mine... oh well!

This picture was taken by my sister Melanie on the beach in California last week. I thought it was an awesome pic-- nice job Mel :) Hopefully in the next month or so she'll have her own blog to post her pics to, but until then I'll gank ones like these for my own gratuitous posting pleasure, heh.

Last week of October already-- you know what I'm thinking. Monday I went with some sibs and my cousin Em to the "Garden After Dark" I believe it was called, a little Halloween-y (hah, I said weeny) thing they're doing up at the Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake. It was just fun to hang out, and they "musical mayhem" guy was funny as well (the Titanic number was classic). I took some pics, don't know if any of them turned out but hopefully I'll get around to posting some tonight.

Ach, only a few days left till Halloween and I've done a downright pitiful job of watching Halloween movies. So far I've watched Ghostbusters and The Grudge (which was alright-- not enough is left to the imagination though). I definitely need to see Boogady if possible (Heebs, any luck there?) and possibly something else if I find time / motivation, hehe. Alas, people have been putting up Christmas lights for a couple of weeks and Halloween will be gone before I know it.

Still, isn't that picture awesome? If only my Trogdor pumpkin from last year had so much burnination goin' on...

Hi.

So I'm reading about the protests that went on at UVSC yesterday as Michael Moore visited and spoke.

People protesting Moore Speaking.

People protesting against the anti-Moore protesters.

People protesting against the War

Against Bush

For peace

To support the troops

People protesting your mom.

I personally have no problem with Moore speaking at UVSC. Sure, I have my opinions about the guy and I don't trust him even as far as I can throw him (which lets face it, I couldn't throw him if I tried-- he was making manipulative and misleading documentaries long before Bush was in office), I do have a problem with the school blowing $50,000 on it. That money could be so much better spent.

Alas, if I heard correctly it has something to do with the student body officers begging Moore to come. Those who know me know how highly I think of UVSC students, heh. It's over and done with, $50,000 down the tubes to listen to an entertainer. An ENTERTAINER. Let's not forget that to counter liberal Moore they brought speaker Sean Hannity a week earlier-- sure, he waived his $100,000 speaking fee, but the school still picked up the $50,000 travel bill for Hannity. WTF? Since when are schools paying for political rallies? College is expensive enough for students as it is, they don't need to be funding these things.

Come on people. These entertainers, be they liberal or conservative, use politics to further polarize and divide America while making themselves money. Do they actually do anything to help solve the problems we face? It's good if people become more aware of the issues and actually vote, sure. But these people aren't going to paint a clear picture of the issues, so what good is the vote if it's based on their influence?

I digress. I'm no good at talking about politics, so I guess I'll stick to what I know. I just had to rant about that pathetic waste of money. Blogs were made to rant on, right?

EDIT:

From what I hear UVSC was able to recover their costs through ticket sales for the event (Moore's speech, that is. I have no idea about Hannity). If that the case then it pretty much makes my rant about how school money is spent useless / pointless. However, I'm still not convinced either makes a good contribution to the country in which we live.

I think it's funny, though, that Moore spoke in Happy Valley, heh.

... Take pictures and put it on your blog.

You guessed it. Bo and Indy really did have their way with some of my MiniDiscs. Carnage a la doggies (the thief being Bo). A couple of these discs that were destroyed had music I don't have on CD... I guess that's incentive to buy the CDs now, huh? Also he destroyed some somewhat rare pink and blue sparkly Sony MiniDisc blanks-- of course you can only get those in Asia, and they're certainly don't make them exactly like that anymore. Otherwise I'm not terribly heart-broken I guess. If I'd cared enough about that MD wallet and discs they'd not have been anywhere where Bo could get them. I'm not sure where he did get them from (somewhere in the basement) but the little bastard got em. This is why he is not welcome in the basement-- he won't rest until he has a trophy.

Oh, and Steve found Bo and Indy chewing on these outside where Bo usually takes his trophies. At least it made for cool (although hasty and blurry) blog pictures, heh. So now I'm tormenting the dogs with a laser pointer, muahaha!

So the Sloan guys are waiting for a table at Tony Roma's on Saturday night after the priesthood session of conference-- if endless slab is going on that's always where we end up. (It's pretty standard for Endless Slab to happen in October).

Spencer (cousin who got married last May) starts asking me what this web site is that I have. I guess I take blogs for granted-- I wasn't sure how to explain it, heh. So I thought I'd honor him by putting his mug up on the site, heh. He's the one in the back of the picture who posed for the picture by putting bbq sauce on his face. Welcome to the world of blogs, Spencer, heh. It was good hanging with you at Tony's.

Ty was asking me some questions about blogs today as well, and we had an interesting discussion about how we can be so fascinated by the thoughts, and words of a complete stranger, even sometimes the drama in their life. Here's to all you bloggers who actually write well enough to suck us into your otherwise foreign world.

I was scanning a scrapbook page for a coworker today-- it was a wedding scrapbook page. It had the words "always and forever", which made me crack up as it reminded me of the sequence after the credits of Napoleon Dynamite where Kip sings that song to his bride.

We met in a chat room... now our love can fully bloom....

Yes, I love technology... but not as much as you, you see. But I still love technology... always and forever.

Ah, hilariousness. The point of this post?

Oh man. Steve just told me that the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack just came out today. I looked at it on Amazon.com and it has tons of dialogue-- this CD is going to be mine, heheh... I mean, it looks really sweet... it's awesome, it's... incredible!

I met Mel at Best Buy because she's looking at laptops and wanted my input. After we finished looking at them she left and I wandered over to the music section to find a cd that was released today, Utada: Exodus. Utada Hikaru is a Japanese "pop" artist who just released her first all-English / American album. I guess you could say it's her "American debut", that would be easier. I have her 3 Japanese albums and like a lot of her music (remember the asian chick I had on my web site's background a little over a year ago? Yeah that's her). So I bought her new CD today. Haven't made up my mind about it, but that's not the main point of my post.

As I walked out of Best Buy I spotted that there was a Noodles & Co. restaurant right there in the parking lot. I've been meaning to try that place, it's relatively new to this neck of the woods. I ordered the Japanese pan noodles and found myself amused that I had just bought a Japanese artists CD and was now going to eat a "Japanese" dish. And lest my food be considered vegetarian I had them throw some grilled steak on there too, heh. Pretty tasty-- I love udon noodles.

Here's the poor guy about 2 days after surgery (last Friday). It took a lot out of him. By now he seems to be a lot more normal, at least in his demeanor-- he wishes he could go out and play like a normal puppy. We've been calling him "Frankenweenie" because of the nasty wounds he has and how they're stitched up. Seriously, we're talking about an incision that's 4-5" long... poor puppy. I'll spare you pictures of that.

It just wouldn't be Sloanie's blog without the obligatory "man, it's xx month already, where did last month / season / year / lifetime go?" So yes. It's October 4th already and I don't know where September went, which is just as well because October is cooler than September. Halloween, anyone? Hee hee.

Things are finally starting to fall into place with my new system at work. I'm waiting on a memory upgrade but otherwise things seem to be functioning 95% great (InDesign is still giving me some headaches with crashes-- please RAM fix that problem). I'm also inching closer to getting things taken care of with my car, I'm hoping I can get it squared away this week.

In general life just seems good. Joel's site is back up for any of you that noticed it was down. Things have been crazy for him over in Korea, his domain expiring and his web host shutting down with out warning no doubt the least of his concerns, though annoyances nonetheless All the same, he's on a new host, using a new blogging system (word press) and have completely revamped his design-- I really dig it. Partly because it makes me hungry for some dwenjang jiigae (a soup similar to miso soup but so much better and tastier), hehe. Anyways, swing by and check it out.

Meh. September left on quite a high note, but October has entered on a lower note. Some chick freakin' just about ran me off the road. After so many close calls where honking was sufficient to get the person to jerk back into their lane, this one seemed oblivous until she was already running into my car. My poor car, it just keeps getting beat up by things beyond it's or my control. It sucks to be her more than it does to be me, though, at least for now. It's really weird to feel upset at someone and feel sorry for them at the same time.

Alright, time to see what I've gotten into. Off to the body shop for an estimate.

At least this was a breeze to blog on my new fancy schmancy G5, right?
